What is Poverty? Part 1

A new friend sent me this video. It's a friend of his in Brazil chipping in his definition of poverty. In the coming weeks I'll be posting a series of video clips on the subject of poverty in order to provoke discussion.

Watch the video and share your thoughts:

What is Poverty? Part 2

This is the second installment of our video exploration of poverty. What is is, and how can we counter it?

In the previous video the speaker attempted to boil poverty down to what he thought was its basic essence: lack of relationships. Clearly, his hope is that by stripping it down we can understand it better and successfully overcome it in the world.

This video takes the exact opposite approach, defining poverty in its breadth. Please watch it and contribute your thoughts through the comments:

  • What impacted you most in this video?
  • Did you see anything you disagreed with?
  • Do you think anything is missing from this video definition?

What Matters To Me

I met Kerri Seger today for coffee to catch up on her plans for Haiti, and during our conversation we talked about the idea that more good can be done in the world by ordinary people simply doing their part than by all the well-intentioned bureaucratic governmental and corporate agencies out there. That's honestly what I believe. It's a big part of why I created Twoshirts.org and I think she's a good example of that.

Then I happened to receive an e-mail from a friend with the link to this video created by a buddy of his in Thailand. I think it sums up the idea very nicely. Check it out.

What is Poverty? Part 3

Check out this short video produced by the Toronto Star newspaper, asking school children the question, "What is poverty and what should be done about it?" I thought it would add an interesting perspective to the question we've been asking

Peter Schiff hasn't been right about everything, but he's definitely been the most prescient economic analyst where the recession is concerned. This video would be sheer entertainment (watch how stupid he makes all the other economic analysts look in retrospect) if it weren't so bleak.
